2016 Olympic Trials Marathon to feature record prize money

ANAHEIM -- The 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Men’s and Women’s Marathon will deliver a record $600,000 prize money, USATF CEO Max Siegel announced Thursday.

The Olympic Trials Marathons, to be contested Feb. 13, 2016 in Los Angeles, will award $300,000 prize money to women and $300,000 to men. The top three finishers from each race who meet Olympic time standards will make the team for Rio.

“We are very happy to be in a position to ensure record prize money for our top distance runners,” said Siegel, who on Tuesday announced record revenue for USATF and an additional $9 million in elite athlete funding from 2015-2020. “We are looking forward to a spectacular Olympic Trials in Los Angeles and further elevating the profile of American marathoning, on one of the world’s most visible media stages.

“We are excited to collaborate with USATF in offering the highest prize purse in the Olympic Trials Marathon history,” said Russell. “This incentive gives us the opportunity to attract the nation’s most competitive long distance runners to the city of Los Angeles and supports LA MARATHON LLC’s long-term commitment to establish Los Angeles as a premiere running city.”
